I was so blown away by Frida's life story that I was compelled too
paint her. However, portraits are really not my cup, especially in miniature
of tea so I think my impression of her is close.
She was very difficult to paint as she has many masculine features,
a huge uni -brow and a more than slight mustache. It was hard
painting a woman with these features and unusual but I'm happy that I did it.
The calla lily represents her love and husband Mexican artist Diego Rivera
famously known for his huge murals of Mexican culture and Calla Lilys.
I thought it a nice touch to the painting.
Frida Kahlo (born Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón; July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954) was a Mexican painter. She painted using vibrant colors in a style that was influenced by indigenous cultures of Mexico and European influences including Realism, Symbolism, and Surrealism. Many of her works are self-portraits that symbolically articulate her own pain and sexuality. Kahlo was married to Mexican muralist Diego Rivera.

As a young artist, Kahlo approached the Mexican painter, Diego Rivera, whose work she admired, asking him for advice about pursuing art as a career. He recognized her talent and her unique expression as truly special and uniquely Mexican.[citation needed] He encouraged her artistic development and began an intimate relationship with Frida. They were married in 1929, despite the disapproval of Frida's mother.
"I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality." - Frida
Her self-portraits became a dominant part of her life when she was immobile for three months after her accident. Kahlo once said, "I paint myself because I am often alone and I am the subject I know best."
I once had a terrible accident and was seriously injured. I could not use my right arm, my painting arm, for 5 years and had many more injuries to rehap. I thought I would never be able to paint again.
When I read about Frida, I felt very lucky!
Later, in his autobiography, Diego Rivera wrote that the day Kahlo died was the most tragic day of his life, adding that, too late, he had realized that the most wonderful part of his life had been his love for her.
