You cannot imagine how confusing this was to paint!

Sometimes I wonder why I must challenge myself so much.

I guess I have to prove I "can" do it! lol!

It really was fun to paint this and all of the patterns

and yet still keep things separate so the patterns didn't blend

all together. Painting it on a much larger canvas 16 x 16

did help. The curtains are a little more gray than the bluish

tint you see here but just could not get the correct lighting

but all in all is very close. Can you imagine walking into

a room and seeing him sitting there!

Henri Rousseau (May 21, 1844 - September 2, 1910) (May 21, 1844 - September 2, 1910) was a French Post-Impressionist painter. He is also known as Le Douanier (the customs officer) after his place of employment. Ridiculed during his life, he came to be recognized as a self-taught genius whose works are of high artistic quality.

In 1893 Henri Rousseau took the chance to retire at the age of 49 on a small pension to realize his dream of becoming a full-time artist. Henri tried to supplement his pension by giving violin and painting lessons and by making portraits on commission. He earned some extra money as a street musician.

Rousseau was self-taught in every way. Even his painting technique was different. He painted the different colors one by one - first the blues and then the greens and so on - and he painted from top to bottom of the canvas.

Rousseau's work is characterized by heavy dependence on line, stiff (and unrealistic) portraiture, wild juxtapositions and flattened perspective from which the Cubists and Surrealists drew heavily. His imagination plays a major role in his work; Rousseau never personally set foot in a jungle. He did, though, spend considerable time viewing the plants and animals at Paris' Jardin des Plantes. It seems wrong to label his work as "primitive" without acknowledging the sense of wonder behind it.

This painting took soooo long to complete!

I just kept adding more and more details, such fun!

It is so hard to keep all of Picasso's wives and lovers

straight. Here is my impression of Picasso's

Marie- Therese Walter from one painting and their

daughter Maya from another. With all of my paintings

of his women I try to include a portrait of him.

He sure was some lover!

I think the play on shapes and colors makes this

an interesting composition.

Marie-Thérèse Walter (July 13, 1909 – October 20, 1977) was the French mistress and model of Pablo Picasso from 1927 to about 1935, and the mother of his daughter, Maya Widmaier-Picasso. Their relationship began when she was seventeen years old; he was 45 and still living with his first wife, Olga Khokhlova . It ended when Picasso moved on to his next mistress, artist Dora Marrr.

In 1935, Marie became pregnant. When Picasso's wife, Olga, was informed by a friend that her husband had a longtime mistress who was expecting a child, she immediately left Picasso with their son Paulo and moved to the South of France. Picasso and Olga never divorced, because Picasso wanted to avoid the even division of property dictated by French law; instead, they lived separately until her death in 1955.
Picasso and Marie's daughter, María de la Concepción, called "Maya", was born on 5 September 1935.
In 1940, Marie and Maya moved to Paris, Boulevard Henri IV no 1, since the house at Le Tremblay-sur-Mauldre was occupied during World War II.
Picasso supported Marie and Maya financially, but he never married Marie.
On 20 October 1977, four years after Picasso's death, Marie-Thérèse committed suicide by hanging herself in the garage at Juan-les-Pins, South of France.
In 2004, Maya's son and Marie-Thérèse's grandson, Olivier Widmaier Picasso, published a biography of his famous grandfather titled Picasso: The Real Family Story.

This paintings was so much more work than

I anticipated but I really like the way it turned out.

Tiffany Lamps are fascinating. There are so many

little pieces that make all he curves and designs of

the lamps.

My friend was bog into stained glass. I was going

to get into it with her until I cut my first piece and my

finger along with it. That was my first and last try.

I'll stick with painting!

A Tiffany Lamp is a type of lamp with many different types of glass shade. The most famous was the stained leaded glass lamp. Tiffany lamps are considered part of the Art Nouveau.

The first Tiffany lamp was created around 1895. Beautiful in design and intricacy, each lamp was handmade by skilled craftsmen, not mass or machine produced. Its designer was not, as had been thought for over 100 years, Louis Comfort Tiffany, but a previously unrecognized artist named Clara Driscoll was identified in 2007 by Rutgers professor Martin Eidelberg as being the master designer behind the most creative and valuable leaded glass lamps produced.

The Tiffany craftsman used geometric shapes such as triangles, squares, rectangles, and ovals to form these patterns for these lamps. Next is the Transition to Flowers group, which is subdivided into the Flowered Cone and Globe lamps. All of these lamps follow a nature, or botanical, design using flowers, dragonflies, spiders with webs, butterflies, and peacock feathers. The difference within these two smaller categories is the difference in the lamp shapes, basically a cone and a globe by Tiffany Studios.

Henri Emile Benoît Matisse was born in a tiny, tumbledown weaver's cottage on the rue du Chêne Arnaud in the textile town of Le Cateau-Cambresis at eight o'clock in the evening on the last night of the year, 31 December 1869 (Le Cateau-Cambrésis is in the extreme north of France near the Belgian border).

Matisse’s discovery of his true profession came about in an unusual manner. Following an attack of appendicitis, he began to paint in 1889, when his mother had brought him art supplies during the period of convalescence. He said later, “From the moment I held the box of colors in my hands, I knew this was my life. I threw myself into it like a beast that plunges towards the thing it loves.

Matisse’s uninhibited celebration of women is often believed to have initiated from Cézanne’s painting Three Brothers (1882) (which he had acquired for himself along with a Van Gogh and a Gauguin). However, Matisse depicts women as nurturing, welcoming, and unlike the forbidding, massive clay-like presence of those of Paul Cezanne.

Matisse died of a heart attack at the age of eighty-four, on November 3, 1954, with Marguerite and Delectorskaya at his side. Lydia Delectorskaya left immediately with the suitcase she had kept packed for fifteen years.

I think I have only painted with Roy Lichtenstien

once before so thought I would try another. I was

surprised to fins a couple of his works that were

similar to Picasso like this crazy lady on the sofa

reflecting in the mirror, just had to paint her twice,
the paintings on the wall, the fish tank and table,

the flowers and the carpet are my impression of

elements from several of his works. This on is

full of detail and brilliant colors! I love to do

reflections, almost like doing a puzzle.

Roy Lichtenstein was born in New York City on October 27, 1923
American painter, sculptor, and printmaker, startled the art world in
1962 by exhibiting paintings based on comic book cartoons.

Lichtenstein was best known for his paintings based on comic strips,
with their themes of passion, romance, science fiction, violence, and
war. In these paintings, Lichtenstein uses the commercial art methods:
projectors magnify spray-gun stencils, creating dots to make the
pictures look like newspaper cartoons seen through a magnifying glass.
In the late 1960s he turned to design elements and the commercial art
of the 1930s, as if to explore the history of pop art (a twentieth-century
art movement that uses everyday items). In 1966 his work was included
in the Venice (Italy) Biennale art show. In 1969 New York's
Guggenheim Museum gave a large exhibition of his work.

I few months ago I did a painting of Picasso's

Wives and Lovers all in one painting. Now I am going

to paint each one of them in their own single

composition and interior.

I really like Picasso's works of his last wife

Jacqueline who was married to him for 20 years before

his death and was so devoted to him. Picasso painted

hundreds of portraits of her in the last years of his life.

I painted Paloma's Boudoir early in this series
who was Picasso's daughter and the painting

was a big hit. Jacqueline missed Picasso so much

that I envisioned her in deep thought about

him looking out at the water in the South of

France where she lived. The figure of Jacqueline

is my take from one of his paintings as well

as the self portrait. Enjoy!

Jacqueline Roque (February 24, 1927 – October 15, 1986) was the second wife of Pablo Picasso and his frequent model. Picasso spent the last 20 years of his life with Roque, during which time he created more than 400 portraits of her. They had no children.
Roque was married previously; from her first marriage she had a daughter, Catherine Hutin-Blay. Before meeting Picasso, she was a saleswoman at Madoura Potteryy in Vallauris, where Picasso's ceramic works were created. After Pablo Picasso separated from Franqoise Gilot, they began their relationship.
Picasso was 79 and Jacqueline 35 when they were secretly married on March 2, 1961 in Vallaurison . Duncan observes: "Jacqueline is the only person I've ever met who gave herself up completely to another."

Roque's image began to appear in Picasso's paintings in May 1954. These portraits are characterized by an exaggerated neck and feline face, distortions of Roque's features. Eventually her dark eyes and eyebrows, high cheekbones, and classical profile would become familiar symbols in his late paintings. It is likely that Picasso's series of paintings derived from Eugene Delacroi's The Women of Algiers was inspired by Roque's beauty; the artist commented that "Delacroix had already met Jacqueline. In 1955 he drew Jacqueline as "Lola de Valence", a reference to Edouard Manet's painting of the Spanish dancer. In 1963 he painted her portrait 160 times, and continued to paint her, in increasingly abstracted forms, until 1972.

After Picasso's death in 1973, Roque fought with his children over the distribution of the artist's estate, and agreed to establish the Musee Picasso in Madrid.

She was such a glamor puss that I thought it would be fun to bring a little of

"The Spirit of Marilyn" to a boudior scene that may have been some of her favorite things.

She loved furs and jewelry, perfume, flowers and hot pink and I am sure she had plenty of mirrors!

A few years ago I did a very small painting of his shoes

paintings and it sold in 5 minutes. It was similar to this one

but much smaller. I can't image being in a shop full of shoes

that Andy Warhol designed. Humm....how many

Andrew Warhola (August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987), known as Andy Warhol, was an American painter, print maker , and filmmaker who was a leading figure in the visual art movement t known as pop art.

In the sixties Warhol started painting daily objects of mass production like Campbell Soup cans and Coke bottles. Soon he became a famous figure in the New York art scene. From 1962 on he started making silkscreen prints of famous personalities like Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth
The pop artist not only depicted mass products but he also wanted to mass produce his own works of pop art. Consequently he founded The Factory in 1962. It was an art studio where he employed in a rather chaotic way "art workers" to mass produce mainly prints and posters but also other items like shoes designed by the artist. The first location of the Factory was in 231 E. 47th Street, 5th Floor (between 1st & 2nd Ave).Taylor.

Andy Warhol died February 22, 1987 from complications after a gall bladder operation. More than 2000 people attended the memorial mass at St.Patrick's Cathedral. The pop art icon Warhol was also a religious man - a little known fact.

I was so surprised to find van Gogh paintings of nudes.

I never knew he painted them. Always something new!

I just loved this one which was taken after his

painting Nude Woman Reclining Paris 1887.

I have painted Vincent's Sunflowers so many times

that I thought it would be nice to try his Irises and they

fit so beautifully in this composition with his nude.

I think the yellow also works so well as it was one

of Vincents favorite colors.

Irises by Vincent van Gogh

Irises is a painting by Vincent van Gogh. Irises was painted while Vincent van Gogh was living at the asylum at Saint Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Remy-de Provence, France, in the last year before his death in 1890.

It was painted before his first attack at the asylum. There is a lack of the high tension which is seen in his later works. He called the painting "the lightning conductor for my illness", because he felt that he could keep himself from going insane by continuing to paint.

The painting was influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints, like many of his works and those by other artists of the time. The similarities occur with strong outlines, unusual angles, including close-up views and also flattish local colour (not modelled according to the fall of light).
He considered this painting a study, which is probably why there are no known drawings for it, although Theo, Van Gogh's brother, thought better of it and quickly submitted it to the annual exhibition of the Societe des Artistes Independents in September 1889, together with Starry Night Over the Rhone. He wrote to Vincent of the exhibition: "[It] strikes the eye from afar. The Irises are a beautiful study full of air and life."

Oh Boy, this took sooo long to do. Everything was fine

lines. I am glad I don't do this all the time. lol!

Even though it took so long to paint I really did enjoy

using all the brilliant reds and colors with the black and

white. They are just so striking together with all the

patterns and stripes. Love the way it turned out.

I wasn't crazy about the original expressions that Ledger

used in his paintings. They all looked so sad and some

had no faces. So I changed all of the faces and many of

the elements for my composition. This is a combination

of three of his paintings with people reading.

Joseph Fernand Henri Léger (February 4, 1881 – August 17, 1955) was a French painter, sculptor, and film maker . In his early works he created a personal form of Cubism which he gradually modified into a more figurative, populist style. His boldly simplified treatment of modern subject matter has caused him to be regarded as a forerunner of Pop Art.
Léger was born in Argentan, Orne, Basse- Normandie, where his father raised cattle. Fernand Léger initially trained as an architect from 1897–1899 before moving in 1900 to Paris, where he supported himself as an architectural draftsman.

Léger wrote in 1945 that "the object in modern painting must become the main character and overthrow the subject. If, in turn, the human form becomes an object, it can considerably liberate possibilities for the modern artist." As he explained in a 1949 essay, by allowing the object to replace the subject, "we were able to consider the human figure as a plastic value, not as a sentimental value. That is why the human figure has remained willfully inexpressive throughout the evolution of my work". As the first painter to take as his idiom the imagery of the machine age, and to make the objects of consumer society the subjects of his paintings, Léger has been called a progenitor of Pop Art.

So much fun doing the research for this painting. When Dominic and I were in the

restoration business we restored several of Eames furniture pieces, especially

these well known Eames black molded plastic chairs. I always wondered what the big attraction

was until I sat in one and melted. They are so comfortable and were so far ahead of their time being Post war Modernism.

I felt the Mark Rothko paintings were a perfect match to use in a composition with Eames as they were from the same Era 1903 - the 70's and the two arts complimented each other so well. The table is also Eames and the Carpt was designed after Rothko.

Well, while I was at it, I dug into the past ( ok giving my age away here) to see what else I could come up with when I hit pay dirt with the Juke Box. I am sure may of you remember those. How fun! Add a couple of Ice Cream Sodas, a penny Bubble Gum Machine, a copy of Look and Bazaar Magazines, a big chrome lamp and couple pairs of those wild and crazy Saddle Shoes and and great Channel Handbag and you have " A Blast From The Past" Enjoy

Mark Rothko, born Marcus Rothkowitz (September 25, 1903 – February 25, 1970), was a Russian-born American painter. He is classified as an abstract Impressionist, although he himself rejected this label, and even resisted classification as an "abstract painter".

Painting consumed Rothko's life, and although he did not receive the attention he felt his work deserved in his own lifetime, his fame has increased dramatically in the years following his death. At odds with the more formally rigorous artists among the Abstract Expressionists, Rothko nevertheless explored the compositional potential of color and form on the human psyche. To stand in front of a Rothko is to be in the presence of the pulsing vibrancy of his enormous canvases; it is to feel, if only momentarily, something of the sublime spirituality he relentlessly sought to evoke. Rigidly uncompromising, Rothko refused to bend to the more distasteful aspects of the art world, a position upheld by his children who did nothing less than alter the entire state of the art market in their fierce protection of his life and work.

Charles & Ray Eames
Eames, Charles & Ray – (Architecture, Furniture, Designer) (1907-1978) Important and influential designers of the Post-war Modern Era. They used technology with an artist's flair. The United States Army commissioned Charles to produce plywood stretchers and splints during the war. He was the first person to produce compound curves with molded plywood and fiberglass. This led to his design of the LCM chair in 1945, it had a molded plywood seat and back with compound curves on metal legs. In 1956, Charles and his wife Ray designed the famous Lounge chair 670 and Ottoman 671 to replace the overstuffed wingchair. It was made of laminated Rosewood with leather padding, and the same bend was used for all the pieces. Eames 670 chair and Van Der Rohe's Barcelona chair are considered the two greatest furniture designs of the 20th Century. Eames the first architect and designer to be completely at home with technology, he mastered the machine so that it was no longer threatening.

The first jukeboxes were simply wooden boxes with coin slots and a few buttons. Over time they became more and more decorated, using color lights, rotating lights, chrome, bubble tubes, ceiling lamps, and other visual effects. Many consider the 1940s to be the "golden age" of jukebox styling with the gothic-like curvaceous "electric rainbow cathedral" look. World War II and the Great Depression were over, so the new designs and sales choices reflected the festive mood. The first model manufactured after WWII was the Model A, produced by AMI. Affectionately referred to as the "Mother of Plastic", it featured large areas of opalescent plastics and colored gemstones.

Love, love, love Joan Miro. I guess because using primary colors in one of my favorite things. I also love his playful attitude with his work. He was known for being childish with his paintings. I look at his work as just really fun! That said, I decided to do a fun room that I would think Miro would get a kick out of. Here it looks as if the party is over. Must have been a great gambling game going on here. Look at all those cards stacked up, poker chips, money on the floor, wine bottle and wine spilled and some forgot their baseball cap on the sofa. Who do those sneakers belong to? Is someone walking barefoot? The back ground and floor are from two of Miro's paintings as well.
Just a lot of fun to paint with all these brilliant colors. Enjoy!

Joan Miró i Ferrà (Catalan pronunciation(April 20, 1893 – December 25, 1983) was a Spanish Catalan, Sculptor, and ceramicist born in Barcelona.

In the beginnings of his career he dabbled in different painting styles that were fashionable at the turn of the century like Fauvism and Cubism.

Joan Miro is known for his playful art. His emblematic images make a naive, childlike impression at first sight. In contrast to the image of his art, he was a solid, hard-working man who preferred to come to gallery exhibitions in dark business suits.

In numerous interviews dating from the 1930s onwards, Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting methods as a way of supporting bourgeois society, and famously declared an "assassination of painting" in favour of upsetting the visual elements of established painting.

In 1920 Miro made the first of a series of trips to Paris. In 1921 he settled permanently in the French capital. He met Pablo Picasso and many of the other great painters and artists living in Paris - the center of arts in the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century.

In 1956 Miro could finally move into the villa of his dreams. Located in Palma de Majorca and built by the architect Josep Lluis Sert. The new home was built in an ultra-modern style typical for the avant-garde architecture of the fifties. In 1992 it was transformed into the Miro Museum open for the public.

Boy, this one was tough! Just sketching it was a challenges in of itself.

when you paint any color next to white you have to wait for it to dry before you do the next color, in this case Red. Each color then requires 2 -3 more layers of each color or glaze, so you can imagine

how long it takes to do a composition such as this. I do really enjoy it though as it is out of the realm for me and of course my signature color again. Red!

Who doesn't love anything by Tiffany.

The colors, the designs, the jewelry, all of it!

This is one of those paintings that is so hard to

appreciate with a photo on the internet as it is hard to

see all of the tiny, tiny details like the bird in the stained

glass of the lamp. One of may favorite elements in this

painting is the reflection of the stained glass Tiffany

window in the ornate gold frame. What better than

white furniture to add to a Tiffany Room!

Founded by Charles Lewis Tiffany and Teddy Young in New York City in 1837 as a "stationery and fancy goods emporium," the store initially sold a wide variety of stationery items, and operated as Tiffany, Young and Ellis in lower Manhatten.

The name was shortened to Tiffany & Co. in 1853 when Charles Tiffany took control, and the firm's emphasis on jewelry was established. Tiffany & Co. has since opened stores in major cities all over the world.

The company revised the Great Seal of the United States in 1885. In 1919, the company made a revision to the Medal of Honor on behalf of the United States Department of the Navy. This "Tiffany Cross" version was rare because it was awarded only for combat, using the previous design for non-combat awards. In 1942 the Navy established the Tiffany version for non-combat heroism, but it proved unpopular, perhaps due to its resemblance to the German Iron Cross.

On January 28, 2008, it was announced that the Japanese mobile phone operator SoftBank and Tiffany & Co. had collaborated in making a limited 10 model-only cellphone. This cellphone contains more than 400 diamonds, totaling more than 20 carats (4.0 g). The cost is said to be more than 100,000,000 yen (£ 781,824).

Well...finally getting back to work after a very long two months of fighting
the flu off and on and dental surgeries. I am so behind in all of my work
and my collectors are so patient waiting for their commissions. Thank you.

Meanwhile before I got sick I had a few paintings almost done so decided
to complete them to get me back in the swing. I had so much fun
with this one.

I wanted to make every single object in this painting detailed and unusual
in some way and to use as many colors as possible. I think I managed
to get it all in but boy...did it take a lone time!!

The funny little reading lady is a character from one of Picasso's
paintings, can't think of the title at the moment. The flooring is a clip
from another and of course the wall paintings are my take on Picasso.
Oh, and the candlestick on the cabinet and the vase on the t
able are from Piacaso's.

I am finding more and more that I change so many things
in the Masters that I use for reference. I think it's fun to combine my
ideas and changes with their work and to build my own concepts.
I love working with Picasso and will be doing many more along the way

Oh boy!...is all I can say. Can you imagine how long it

took to paint this? I have been working on it off and on

for weeks. I must have covered the entire canvas 6 -8 times

working all of the details and layers of glazes. I so wish that

photos on the net would do this justice but they don't.

There are 35 or maybe it's 36 elements in this painting.

I lost count. These are some of my favorite antiques. When

we were in the art and antique restoration business, we restored

many of these antiques. I used many of the photos I had from

the antiques we restored as reference for this piece. It

is not likely that you would find a Renoir or a da Vinci in

an antique shop but you may find a print. I just thought

they looked great with all the other elements and are two

of my favorites from those artists. My favorite element is

the little yellow bottle on the front table. It is my personal

bottle from my collection. The label reads " Dreams" and

I always leave the top off.

I love antique shops and when I visit them I always

wonder where these treasures traveled from. If they

could only talk! Enjoy!

Pierre-Auguste Renoir is a famous French impressionist painter,
Renoir was born in Limoges, Haute-Vienne, France, on February 25,
1841 as a child of a working class family. Renoir’s first encounter with
painting dates from his childhood he worked in a porcelain factory
where his drawing talent led to him painting designs on China.
Renoir's paintings are probably the most popular, well-known,
and frequently reproduced images in the history of art.

Another fun take on Peter Max. When I saw Maxes painting of the couple on the sofa I just envisioned a whole day of hard playing with Peter Max. Can you imagine how much fun it would be to visit his studio? Now this couple is all pooped out from being out and about in the neighborhood ( Max painting out the window), maybe playing a long game of basketball and listening to music. Now their resting on the beautiful red painted sofa that Max painted for them enjoying a bottle of wine while the
wall ladies look on, also a Max painting with three faces. Can you see them?

I rarely use pink on my palette but it just seemed to fit for this composition and I love to see it with red.

Peter Max (born Peter Max Finkelstein, October 19, 1937) is a German-born Jewish American artist best known for his iconic art style in the 1960's.

I have only done a few paintings with Dali. I always

find his work so far out that I get stuck with the composition

....until now! I love this piece and all the drama and passion

it projects. Nothing is prettier than red with black and white.

I would love to have that sofa and carpet!
In researching him today I find that I 'was born on his
birthday. Humm....is that good or bad?

Do you have your own private Haven? A place where you go to relax and unwind. A place that is full of all your favorite things surrounding you. A place where you go by yourself to reflect?

van Gogh was such a troubled soul. I wondered if her ever found his own private Haven?

When I look at his work an try to put myself in his mind set.... Impossible! He struggled with anxiety and metal illness all of his life. Who knows what was in his troubled mind when he painted his sunflowers out in the fields all alone.

I wanted to create what I thought would be a Haven for van Gogh if he was alive today. Here the flooring is a clip from one of his Sunflower paintings as well as the wall. On the ottoman are some of his favorite things. His straw hat and a his bible. I was surprised to find that Vincent always wanted to be a preacher and did in fact preach on occasion but he was just too unstable to follow through.

Of course the shoes are his as well that he included in a few of his works. I can't imagine walking in van Goghs shoes! In this Haven is warmed by a nice fire, sipping wine and smoking his pipe. His soul being smoothed by beautiful music from the phonograph.

Another Matisse and many more to come. I love Matisse's bold colors and patterns. I thought it would be fun to see if I could do a painting that would make sense in the end with as many patterns as I could.
I think this one turned out really great. I had not idea where it would go when I started it and thought I may end up trashing it in the end but I just love the end result.

I did a study on Patterns by Matisse and was amazed at what I found.

Throughout his career Matisse employed his serene and joyous imagery in mediums outside the fine arts -- book illustration, tapestry and rug design, and architectural decoration. From 1944 to the end of his life, he produced decoupes, in which he cut shapes from colored paper and pasted them onto fields of white. These works, which achieve an ultimate blending of Matisse's vibrant color with the energetic flow of his line, are considered by many to be his best. Matisse's supreme accomplishment, which may be seen in all his work, was to liberate color from its traditionally realistic function and to make it the foundation of a decorative art of the highest order.

Henri Matisse 31 December 1869 – 3 November 1954) was a French Artist, known for his use of color and his fluid and original draftsmanship. He is known primarily as a painter although was also a draftsman and sculptor. Although he was initially labeled a Fauve (wild beast), by the 1920s he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting. His mastery of the expressive language of color and drawing, displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, won him recognition as a leading figure in Modern Art.

I don't think I will ever tire of painting with Picasso. Every time
I research him I find more and more information and works of his that
I have not seen before. I found this painting of Dora Marr recently
and decided that since they had such a long relationship, that
I wanted to paint this one.

I included a bit of scenery with the buildings in the back ground
from Paris. The table with the still life is my take on it from his paintings
with several changes including the candle which is from another of his
paintings. I added the wine and glasses and took out a few other
elements. The small painting on the wall is one that Dora painted of
Pablo. Hence the title: "Dora and Picasso - A Paris Afternoon"

The pitcher on the floor is from one of Picasso's still life's and of
course the larger painting on the wall is another that Picasso painted
of Dora. He painted many o herall differently. He must have seen her
in many different ways. By the way, the paintings on the wall are
straight in the painting, but again, I cannot seem to correct this arching
that I get with my camera which always makes them look off.
This is a nice size of 14 x 14 and the sides are painted so no frame
is needed.

Picasso and Dora Maar - A Mercurial Meeting of Minds

In the winter of 1935 Picasso became intimately involved with
Dora Maar, a stunningly beautiful, passionate and acutely intelligent
young woman. Dora's influence was to stimulate one of the most
innovative periods of his career. His personal life was in turmoil when
they met: he had broken up with his wife Olga Koklova, a ballet dancer
with the Ballet Russes; and Marie-Thérèse Walter, his mistress since
1927, had given birth to their daughter, Maya. He felt incapable of
painting and instead devoted his creative energy to writing poetry.

Dora Maar was already established in Paris as an acclaimed fashion
and publicity photographer, before her involvement with Picasso.
Aside from her commercial practice she was an innovative Surrealist
photographer, painter, intellectual and political activist. It is easy to
understand how the meeting of Dora and Picasso's inventive
minds influenced their work and fed each other's creative
potential.

Picasso and Dora had a complex personal and artistic relationship
that spanned the intense period from the outbreak of the Spanish
Civil War to the end of the Second World War. Picasso once
admitted that for him, Maar had become the personification
of war as he painted her many times during World War II.
Shortly after their first meeting, in the winter of 1935/36, they began
an artistic collaboration. Dora photographed Picasso in her studio at
at 29, rue d'Astorg. These early portraits are important records
that capture Picasso, the guarded professional artist, as he gradually
surrenders to the warmth and tenderness of a close relationship.
Mysteriously, Dora developed some of these portraits but never
printed them. It is almost as if the ethereal nature of the negatives had
captured the soul of the man she loved, a secret she preferred to keep
to herself.

She became Picasso's constant companion and lover from 1936
through April, 1944. Maar went back to painting and exhibited in
Paris soon after Picasso left her for Françoise.
In later years she became a recluse, dying poor and alone.

Maar kept many of Piccaso’s portraits of her for herself until she
died in 1997.She suffered Picasso’s moods during their love affair.
Maar and Picasso’s love affair ended in 1944 and Picasso left her
a drawing of 1915 as a good-bye gift.

I found it very interesting that with all the brilliant

colors that Matisse used that he actually did several

paintings in black and white. So.... here are six

of them in this composition. Of course I could not resist

adding the red flowers to each one and a touch of red

here and there, to, as they say, kick it up a notch!

Not to mention that it is my signature color.

Matisse never worried about perspective andhis

tables the tops are turned up so you can see the items

on the tables. I think I managed to pull that off here with

the checked table.

Henri Matisse is considered the most important French artist of the 20th century and, along with Pablo Oicasso, one of the most influential modernist painters of the last century. Matisse began studying drawing and painting in the 1890s. A student of the masters of Post-Impressionism, Matisse later made a reputation for himself as the leader of a group of painters known as Les Fauves. An ironic label given to them by a critic (it means "wild beasts"), the name reflected Matisse's aggressive strokes and bold use of primary colors. In 1905 Matisse gained sudden fame with three paintings, including Woman with the Hat, purchased by the wealthy American ex-patriot Gertrude Stein . Beyond painting, he worked with lithographs and sculpture, and during World War II he did a series of book designs. Later in his career he experimented with paper cutouts and designed decorations for the Dominican chapel in Vence, France. last year. I changed many things in this one to make it

my collectors original. In this composition I used a

different piano, candelabra, couple, flowers, floor and the

two paintings on the wall. Most of the rest is very similar.

Oscar-Claude Monet (1840-1926) is a famous French painter and one of the founders of the Impressionism movement along with his friends Renoir, Sisley and Bazille.

Monet rejected the traditional approach to landscape painting and instead of copying old masters he had been learning from his friends and the nature itself. Monet observed variations of color and light caused by the daily or seasonal changes.

Claude Monet was born on November 14, 1840 on the fifth floor of 45 rue Laffitte,in the ninth arrondissement of Paris. He was the second son Claude Adolphe Monet and Louise-Justine Aubree. On the first of April 1851, Monet entered the Le Havre secondary school of the arts. He became known locally for this charcoal caricatures, which he would sell for ten to twenty francs. Monet also undertook his first drawing lessons from Jacques-Francois Ochard, a former student of Jacques-Louis David. On the beaches of Normandy in about 1856/1857 he meet fellow artist Eugéne Boudin who became his mentor and taught him to use oil paints. Boudin taught Monet "en plein air" (outdoor) techniques for painting.

when I work with him. I found this painting of
"Magritte's Room" and just knew it was perfect for this composition,
of course with my changes and additions.Here's a photo so you can see
how his painting inspired "An Eye on Magritte."
All of the painting on the wall are Magritte, as well as the "Eye"
that I used for the flooring, the Bird painted like clouds, the
crazy piano, The scene in the window and the Pipe Painting on the easel.
He loved those hats and his pipe so I did a play on them as well.

René François Ghislain Magritten ( 21 November 1898 – 15 August 1967) was a Belgian surrealist artist. He became well known for a number of witty and thought-provoking images. His intended goal for his work was to challenge observers' preconditioned perceptions of reality and force viewers to become hypersensitive to their surroundings.
Magritte's work frequently displays a juxtaposition of ordinary objects in an unusual context, giving new meanings to familiar things. The representational use of objects as other than what they seem is typified in his painting,

Magritte used the same approach in a painting of an apple: he painted the fruit realistically and then used an internal caption or framing device to deny that the item was an apple.
Magritte points out that no matter how closely, through realism-art, we come to depicting an item accurately, we never do catch the item itself.

Magritte's use of ordinary objects in unfamiliar spaces is joined to his desire to create poetic imagery. He described the act of painting as "the art of putting colors side by side in such a way that their real aspect is effaced, so that familiar objects—the sky, people, trees, mountains, furniture, the stars, solid structures, graffiti—become united in a single poetically disciplined image. The poetry of this image dispenses with any symbolic significance, old or new.

I remain always fascinated with Matisse, his colors and his textiles.

He used so many brilliant colors together and a lot of red!

Always makes me happy!

The pattern on the wall is one of Matisse's textiles.

My impression of part of one of his paintings hangs over the fireplace.

The window view is from another, as well as the plants on the table

and in the window. The sofa is my idea of what maybe Mr Matisse

would like to have in his parlor.....hum...?

While I was researching his use of combining several

different patterns in his paintings, the word puzzles came to mind.

I think that I was wondering if his use of all those patterns in one

composition ever puzzles people??? Therefor the inspiration

for "Puzzled with Matisse" was born. Silly, I know, but true!

I never get tired of paintings with him

Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was born in the north-eastern industrial French town of Le Cateau-Cambrésis, the son and grandson of weavers. His childhood was spent in Bohain-en-Vermandois before he ran away to Paris in 1891. The area of Bohain had produced textiles since medieval times and the economic recovery following the Franco-Prussian war (1870-1871) led to a burgeoning industry for luxury fabrics, supplied to Paris couturiers: 'The weavers of Bohain were celebrated for their bold experimentation. The luxury textile industry in Bohain declined throughout the 20th century and eventually disappeared … the sumptuous fabrics, ranging from the complex and floral motifs of the 1880s to the more geometric and abstract patterns of the 1890s.'2 The grim, industrial environment of northern France held no interest for Matisse who described the first two decades of his life as having been spent in prison. He later discovered the colour and light of the Mediterranean, where he spent most of his prolific career. However, the dominance of colour in the form of the marvellous and varied fabrics that surrounded Matisse in childhood, and which he collected from an early age, were significant.

John Berger, however, captured the essence of Matisses powers: 'He clashed his colours together like cymbals, and the effect was like a lullaby.

•      I always enjoy painting with Klimt but there are sooo many details. They just go on and on.
   I have done "The Kiss by Klimt" so many times and never get tired of it as it is my favorite
         his. I already did a Klimt with a harp but it was so popular I thought I would try another.
   The Harpist and the flooring is from two more Klimt paintings.

   I used a lot of Metallics in this one just as Klimt did in many of his paintings.
         It is very hard to capture metallic's with a camera. I used 3 shades of red and over layed
         them as glazes along with deep gold, siennas, blacks, blues, gree and whites. Enjoy!

Paul Poiret is an artist that we do not see mentioned

much, at least where I have been. Since I have

always loved fashion design and did design for fashion

in my younger years I admire many of the old designers.

Poiret was from 1979 - 1944 but I love his fashions and

illustrations.

In this painting I hung one of Poiret's paintings in the back

ground but wanted to design my own fashion. Of

course I had to add the big hat. I think I love them

because I can't wear them. I love the way the tow women

are in such deep thought...hummm?

Paul Poiret, (born April 20, 1879, Paris, France—died April 30, 1944, Paris), French couturier, the most fashionable dress designer of pre-World War I Paris. Poiret was particularly noted for his Neoclassical and Orientalist styles, for advocating the replacement of the corset with the brassiere, and for the introduction of the hobbie skirt, a vertical, tight-bottomed style that confined women to mincing steps. “I freed the bust,” boasted Poiret, “and I shackled the legs.”
After serving as a designer in the house of Parisian Fashion designer Charles Fredric Worth, Poiret opened a small shop in Paris in 1903. By 1907 he had been instrumental in reviving the Empire style, popular in France during the reign of Napoleon. Inspired by a widespread interest in Eastern art and Russian Ballet, he created flamboyant, theatrical designs. Every once in awhile I have to do a more

I have always loved Mucha and admire

painted.

Goes to Mikulov where he earns a living by painting portraits. Meets Count Khuen Belasi who commissions him to decorate his castle at Emmahof.

Moves to Castle Gandegg, Tyrol, where Count Khuen's brother, an amateur artist, becomes Mucha's patron.

Love, love Big Hats!

Tamara loved them too!

She painted many of her models

with high fashioned hats. I guess because

she was so involved in the fashion world

and Holywood. She painted many of the stars

of her time.

This is a short post as I am totally

burnt out from all the recent surgeries

and trying to get caught up on things.

Tamara Lempicka is best known for her Art Deco-styled portraits. Sexy, bedroom-eyed women in stylish dress are rendered in haunting poses. Perhaps it was her own dramatic life mirrored in her art. Married twice to wealthy, she moved from her native Poland to Russia, and then to Paris. In 1918, she studied painting at the Academe de la Grand Chaumiere, and was privately tutored by Maurice Denis. In 1925 she exhibited her works at the first Art Deco show in Paris. She moved to America in 1939 with her second husband, Baron Raoul Kuffner.

I Have always had an attraction for hats. I just love

Big Hats! If I lived in the time when women wore
hats all the time I would have had an entire wardrobe
of them. I never wear them because I look terrible in
them. Maybe that why I'm attracted!
On this painting I used softer colors then I
usually use but still with a lot of depth of color
created by using several layers of glazes in many
colors. It creates an interesting effect.
Wonder who the Secret Lover is?
Maybe Miss Lady in the Matisse paintings
will tell us?

Henri Emile Benoît Matisse was born in a tiny, tumbledown weaver's cottage on the rue du Chêne Arnaud in the textile town of Le Cateau-Cambrésis at eight o'clock in the evening on the last night of the year, 31 December 1869 (Le Cateau-Cambrésis is in the extreme north of France near the Belgian border). The house had two rooms, a beaten earth floor and a leaky roof. Matisse said long afterwards that rain fell through a hole above the bed in which he was born. Matisse’s ancestors had lived in the area for centuries before the convulsive social and industrial upheavals of the nineteenth century. Matisse grew up in a world that was still detaching itself from a way of life in some ways unchanged since Roman times. The coming of the railway had put Bohain on the industrial map, but people still traveled everywhere on foot or horseback.

Stolen Picasso And Matisse Works Possibly

'Crushed In A Rubbish Truck'

It was the perfect heist: sleeping museum guards, a broken alarm system, $140 million in loot, a police hunt that lasted over a year... there was just one problem. The paintings, including a Picasso and Matisse, ended up in the trash; according to The Guardian, while the investigation was underway, one of the suspects "panicked and destroyed the canvasses before throwing them into a rubbish bin."
Early in the morning of May 20, 2010, a lone, masked burglar entered the Paris Museum of Modern Art by removing the screws of a window, originally intending to steal Fernand Leger's 'Still Life With Candlestick.' However upon cutting the painting from its frame, he discovered the alarm was broken; it was later discovered that the alarm had been broken for over a month prior to the theft. He then proceeded to walk around the museum for over an hour, picking up four more paintings on the way and getting away in a nearby parked car. There were security cameras but no guards noticed the masked visitor.

Here's is another fun painting for my Art within Art Series. I just love working with so many colors.
The main colors here being just black, red and white makes this painting so happy and brilliant.
The little lady waiting for Matisse on the sofa is from his painting, Danseuse Dans le Feuteuil, Sol en Damier, 1942. I also used the checkered background
as a symbol of from his painting.

The flowers on the piano are from one of Matisse's floral works and the two paintings on the wall are
Matisse's Pasiphe Embracing and Oilive Tree and the other is Pasiphe.
Adding the accessories like the shoes, hat, sunglasses and wine and glasses completes the story of " A Date with Matisse"

Henri Matisse 31 December 1869 – 3 November 1954) was a French artist , known for his use of color and his fluid and original draughtsmanship.

Matisse was influenced by the works of Nicolas Poussin,Antoine Watteau, , Jean- Baptiste- Simeon, Eduard Manet and the Post- Impressionists Cezanne, Gauguin, van Gogh and Signac and also by Auguste Rodin.
Matisse immersed himself in the work of others and got in debt from buying work from many of the painters he admired. The work he hung and displayed in his home included a plaster bust by Rodin, a painting by Gauguin, a drawing by van Gogh, and most importantly, Cézanne's Three Bathers. In Cézanne's sense of pictorial structure and colour Matisse found his main inspiration. Many of his paintings from 1899 to 1905 make use of a Pointillist technique adopted from Signac. In 1898, he went to London to study the paintings of J.M.W. Turner and then went on a trip to Corsica Upon his return to Paris he worked beside lesser known painters such as Jules Flandrin.

I don't think I will ever paint Modi and Jeanne enough. I love the story. I love the art.
In 2000 there were many photos, stories released about Modi and Jeanne, as well as over 200 paintings by Jeanne. They were entrusted to a family friend who promised Jeanne Modigliani, their daughter, that he would follow her wishes and not release them until then which was 16 years after her death.

I found so many wonderful reference photos that I had not seen before. The first two hanging in the back ground are a "Self" Portrait of Modi and a portrait of Jeanne by Modi.
The other two are a "Self" Portrait and a portrait of Modi painted by Jeanne. Modi in the foreground is a scene that I remembered from the movie when Modi smoking a cigarette after finishing this portrait of Jeanne. The cabin rustic interior makes a great studio environment.
Always fun painting Modi and his life and more to come for my collectors and fans.

Amedeo Modigliani and Jeanne Heburtene

Some truths about Modgliani. He was an alcoholic. He was a drug addict. He was sickly. As a youth in Livorno, Italy, he was afflicted with several serious illnesses; pleurisy, typhoid fever, tuberculosis. His infirm health would plague him throughout his adulthood and provide some rationale for his fatalistic attitude later in life.

Jeanne Hebuterne was born in Paris into a strict Roman Catholic family. She aspired to be an artist . She modeled for several painters and sculptors, but soon enrolled in the Academie Colarossi for her own artistic training. There, in the spring of 1917, she met the charismatic Modigliani, who was called “Modi” by friends. Almost immediately, the couple fell deeply in love. He was 15 years her senior.

Jeanne had much to deal with in addition to the high-maintenance lover that was Amedeo Modigliani. Her conservative family took tremendous issue with her romantic involvement with Modi. They objected vehemently for a few reasons. He was a penniless artist. he was a wild living degenerate,he was a Jew. Against her families wishes she went, to love Modigliani completely, faithfully, and ultimately to her own devastation.

Unmarried, Modi and Jeanne moved in together. They had a child, a daughter, born in November of 1918. Jeanne sat for over 20 works by Modigliani, and still found time to devote to her own art as well.
Modigliani passed away. He was 35 years old. Jeanne was shattered and overcome with grief. . The prospect of life without Modi was unimaginable. Or intolerable. Or both. Less than 48 hours after Modigliani died, Jeanne, who was nine months pregnant with her second child, threw herself out a fifth floor window. Both she and her unborn child died in the fall. Jeanne Hebuterne was just 20 years old.

Jeanne Modigliani (29 November 1918 – 27 July 1984)was the biographer of her father, artist Amedeo Modigliani, writing the 1958 book Modigliani, man and myth, later translated into English from the Italian by Esther Rowland Clifford.

Her father, Amedeo Modlgliani (July 12, 1884 – January 24, 1920), was an Italian artist who worked mainly in France. Primarily a figurative artist, he became known for paintings and sculptures in a modern style characterized by mask-like faces and elongation of form. He died in Paris of tubercular meningitis, exacerbated by poverty, overwork, and addiction to alcohol and narcotics.

Her mother, Jeanne Heburtene (April 6, 1898 – January 25, 1920), was a French artist, best known as the frequent subject and common-law wife of the artist Amedeo Modigliani.
After her father's death and her mothers suicide a day later, she stayed with her grandparents until a later date when her aunt Florence Modigliani took her and raised her.

painting this year. I repainted similar...but not the same

paintings several times. I like to make each on it's own

original so I make small changes. Since Peter is still

a living artist I really change a lot of the elements

from his work to what I would have done to make

them my originals out of respect for him.

painting from me several months ago for Tom's

birthday. Last year Tom purchased a Matisse
(on the back wall)

Art within Art painting from me and just loved it.

When Dawne ordered Peter's Piano she did no know

that Tom mentioned to me that this was going to be

the next one he purchased from me so it was

a shocking surprise to him when he received

it for his birthday.

I have to say I am very blessed that I receive many

beautiful, kind emails about my work but this one

really touched my heart and no-one has ever said

these things to me. I just wanted to share this with you

and had to brag a bit!

Hi Madison,

I want to tell you how surprised, and THRILLED, I was to receive the Max’s Piano painting from the always attentive, and inspiring, love of my life, Dawne. I had no idea what was coming, of course, and as I opened the present, I opened it from the rear, so I quickly discovered it was some sort of painting, but when I finally saw WHICH painting I was SO happy, SO very pleased! It’s perfect, and certainly my favorite painting of the few that I own, and probably one of the best of all I’ve ever seen. It’s just wonderful!

Sometimes I go the daily painters gallery, select your name from the list of artists, and am just overwhelmed, every time, by the colorful and eclectic body of work that assembles on the page. It is truly amazing, and a museum of just your work would be a really amazing thing, on par with any assembly of art anywhere, including the artists that you so whimsically, and so complimentariy,
parody (if that’s the right word!).

And I really mean what I say! Sometime, just take a look at your own body of work. Prolific, imaginative, creative, researched, a compliment to the BROAD array of artists that you pay homage, and just plain FUN! Your work is so far above everything else around.

Perhaps they are of the same pop era and culture. But the line “You danced with a lady with a hole in her stockings, didn’t it feel good?” is as whimsical and descriptive as your paintings.

I did a Homage to Pater Max in the beginning of the year titled
Peter's Piano. I have to say that it is one of the most popular paintings for
this year. I did several similar, but not the same commissions, including a
very large format commission for a friend of Peter Max's, which just
thrilled me. I Check out his site www.themaxcollector.com

You have to love him. He has works all over the place and knows
so many people and other artists. What a legacy!...and such a nice guy too! I
have listed some facts about him here that I thought were interesting.
Always learning something new! Love it!

This painting is 12 x 16, a really nice size and different from the first
Peter's Piano at 11 x 14.
It is my impression of combined elements from five of Peter's
paintings including his self portrait. The flooring is from another as well as
the Baldwin Piano that he painted. What great colors!

has graciously designed this limited edition

Peter Max (born Peter Max Finkelstein, October 19, 1937) is a
German-born Jewish American artist best known for his “Cosmic 60s”
art style, as it came to be known in the 1960's . At first, works in this
style appeared on posters and were seen on the walls of college dorms
all across America. Max then became fascinated with new printing techniques
that allowed for four-color reproduction on product merchandise.
In 1970, many of Max's products and posters were featured in the exhibition
"The World of Peter Max" which opened at the M.H. de Young
Memorial Museum in San Francisco. The US Postal Service commissioned
Max to create the first 10¢ postage stamp to commemorate the Expo
74World's Fair in Spokane, Washington. July 4, 1976, Max began his
Statue of Liberty series leading to his efforts with Chrysler CEO Lee
Iacocca to help spearhead the restoration of the statue.

Official artist for many major events including Grammy Awards, Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame, The Super bowl and others.

He also hosted the Xpress Peter Max Coloring Contest in the St. Petersburg
Times in November 2005. The contest, located in St. Petersburg, Florida,
was a contest for children to color in a sketch by Max. Of 800 entries, 90
were sent to Max, who chose a grand prize winner, a runner-up and 10
honorable mentions

Max's art work was a part of the Psychedelic movement in graphic design.
His work was much imitated in commercial illustration in the late 1960s
and early 1970s.

His artwork is currently on the walls of CBS's The Early Show where
his newly created installation of 44 Obamas, commemorating the 44th
President of The United States was debuted.

Max owns a collection of 36 Chevrolet Corvettes, dating from 1953 to
1988, one for each year. The collection has been horribly neglected.
Peter Max is an environmentalist and defender of human and animal rights.

One of Continental Airlines" Boeing 777-200ER aircraft
(registered N77014) sported a special livery designed by Max.
The livery was removed in the winter of 2007–2008.

Peter Max currently lives in New York Citywith his wife, Mary Max.

Of course I would like the works of Marcel Mouly with
all the wonderful brilliant colors he used. Many times
I am asked if I have larger paintings for this Art within
Art Series so I decided to do a few that are larger than 11 x 14
my basic size. They are so full of detail that it takes much
longer to paint but I do have a few even larger coming up.

This one is 16 x 16 and full of brilliance!

I love this painting for all the Red, my favorite signature color.
Makes me happy! I took elements from several Marcel Mouly
paintings and did my impression of them to compose this piece.

Marcel Mouly (February 6, 1918 – January 7, 2008) was a French
artist who painted in an abstract style.

Mouly was born in Paris France on February 6, 1918. His Interest
in art developed in grade school. A precocious, mischievous child,
Mouly was first sent to drawing class as a form of punishment.
However, Mouly loved learning to draw, and exhibited a natural
artistic talent, though his path to a career as an artist proved not to
be a linear one.

By the mid-1940s, Mouly's art began to gain notoriety from his peers
and collectors; in 1945 his paintings were exhibited in the Salon
d' Automne in Paris, and the following year at the Salon d" Mai.
Mouly's first one-person exhibition was held in 1949 at the Libraire
Bergamasque.
Mouly's style was influenced by the deep, bold colors typically used
in Matisse's fauvist works, and by the cubism of Picasso. Beginning
in the mid-1950s, Mouly created many lithographs. And his works
received great interests globally.
Marcel Mouly's work has been exhibited all over the world, including
in the permanent collections of more than 20 museums, such as the
Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in Japan,
the Museum of Geneva, the Museum of Modern Art in Helsinki, and
Paris' Bibliotheque. He has also been the subject of numerous books,
and recognized by such honors as the Chevalier de L'Orde des Arts
et Lettres (1957) and the Premier Prix de Lithographie (1973).
Though Marcel Mouly died on January 7, 2008, weeks shy of his
90th birthday, his art and his legacy live on. "His art is pure and
direct in its message," art historian and writer Joseph Jacobs said,
"it is an art about beauty and life, an art roots firmly planted in the
School of Paris, Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Roault, Vlaminck, Chagall,
Vuillard and Dufy are his patrimony, and he has carried their mantel
with unflagging dedication." At his death in 2008, he was the last
living protégé of Picasso.

At one time and for a very long time men dominated the artists

world. Georgia O’Keeffe not only carved out a significant place
for women painters in an area of the American art community
that had been exclusive to and is still dominated by men, but
also she had become one of America’s most celebrated cultural
icons well before her death at age 98 in 1986.

I admire Georgia O'Keefe and her beautiful style. Her freedom
of spirt shows in all of her work. She made a huge break
through for women in the art world. I want to pay a really
nice homage to her but wanted to keep the painting minimal
with impact and drama.
I found this great black and white photo by photographer
Alfred Stieglitz . He thought it would be fun to show those same
lovely hands at an older age, The photo was taken in 1966 as part
of a Life Magazine story by John Leongard.

Originally she was sitting on a bed but I wanted her to have
somewhat of a look of royalty so I thought this high back chair
would do the trick. Georgia loved to paint very large and very
close up on her subjects and expressed this technique all the
time with her abstract floral paintings. I think my impression
of her floral abstracts expressed the magnitude of her work.
Since I also decide to use her Black and White Rose for the floor
of the painting, I thought it would be great to leave Georgia
in black and white as in the photo, somewhat monochromatic.

Monochromatic: containing or using only one color:
Although this composition is not totally monochromatic I think
I captured the dramatic expression of the painting that I was going for
as my homage to Georgia O'Keefe.
I wonder though...what book is she holding in the photo?

Georgia O'Keeffe was born November 15, 1887, in a farmhouse
near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Her parents, Francis Calyxtus
O'Keeffe and Ida Totto O'Keeffe, were dairy farmers. Georgia
was the first female and the second of seven O'Keeffe children.
O'Keeffe attended Town Hall School in Sun Prairie. By age ten
she had decided to become an artist.

O'Keeffe first came to the attention of the New York art
community in 1916, several decades after women had gained
access to art training in America’s colleges and universities,
and before any of its women artists were well known or highly
celebrated. Within a decade, she had distinguished herself as
one of America's most important modern artists, a position she
maintained throughout her life.

Her abstract imagery of the 1910s and early 1920s is among the
most innovative of any work produced in the period by American
artists. She revolutionized the tradition of flower painting in the
1920s by making large-format paintings of enlarged blossoms,
presenting them close up as if seen through a magnifying lens.

In 1972, O' Keeffe's eyesight was compromised by, leading to the
loss of central vision and leaving her with only her peripheral vision.
She stopped oil painting without assistance in 1972,
but continued working in pencil and charcoal until 1984.

Juan Hamilton, a young potter, appeared at her ranch house in
1973 looking for work. She hired him for a few odd jobs and
soon employed him full time. He became her closest confidante,
companion, and business manager until her death. Hamilton
taught O'Keeffe to work with clay, and working with assistance,
she produced clay pots and a series of works in watercolor. In
1976, she wrote a book about her art and allowed a film to be
made about her in 1977. On January 10, 1977, President Gerald
Ford presented O'Keeffe with the Presidential Medal of Freedom
the highest honor awarded to American citizens. In 1985, she
was awarded the National Medal of Arts.

O'Keeffe became increasingly frail in her late 90s. She moved to
Santa Fe in 1984, where she died on March 6, 1986, at the age of
98. In accordance with her wishes, she was cremated and her
ashes were scattered to the wind at the top of the Pedernal Mountain,
over her beloved "faraway".

I am always looking for new artist that I can study

and paint with. Kees von Dongan caught my eye.

I love his flair for beautiful woman caught my eye.

However, I could not decide on just one or two

of his beauties so I decided to use four in one painting.

They all look so relaxed and mellow. Nice wine, art and

music to enjoy together. The painting on the wall is

Kees Van Dongen: Tango or The Tango of the Archangel,

ca. 1923 - 1935 and a very interesting composition.

Kees van Dongen, it turns out, was a Dutch painter, born in
Rotterdam on 26 January 1877, at, according to Astrodatabank,
7am. He moved to Paris in his twenties and achieved some success,
using inspiration from the raw sensuality he found in that great city.

Van Dongen can be seen an observer of society, from the bohemian
world through to the “cocktail age,” his work is influenced by the
scandalous and urban world of cabaret, the circus and women, very
different from the landscape Fauvism (often associated with this
movement) and later ventures into the Parisian high society and his
representation of the Roaring Twenties. For more information in this

Every once in awhile I have to do a painting

inspired by Tamara de Lempicka. She was such a glamor puss.

She came from wealth and married wealth and soom became the

artist to the stars when she moved to Hollywood from Paris

during the Art Deco period. She was many times mistaken

for a star herself. She loved the life and loved the fame and

glamor and was a very talented portrait artist.

I get a kick out of so many artists from that period

thought very buxom large women were beautiful and painted

many of them. Isn't that nice. Something we do not see

much of today!

This painting was inspired by Tamara with my take of one

of her nudes. What is that man doing!!! Is he sneaking a peek

of her lounging nude in front of the scenery of the lake?

Does she know he's there? Who is "The Man in The Mirror?

The tulips are my take from another of her works.

Love her palette!

Tamara de Lempicka was born Maria Gorska of well-to-do parents in turn-of- the-century Poland. After her mother and father divorced, her wealthy grandmother spoiled her with clothes and travel. By age 14 she was attending school in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Now known as Tamara De Lempicka, the refugee studied art and worked day and night. She became a well-known portrait painter with a distinctive Art Deco manner. Quintessentially French, Deco was the part of a exotic, sexy, and glamorous Paris that epitomized Tamara's living and painting style.

At the threat of a second World War, she left Paris for America. She went to Hollywood, to become the "Favorite Artist of the Hollywood Stars". She and her second husband, Baron Raoul Kuffner, one of her earliest and wealthiest patrons, moved into American film director King Vidor's former house in Beverly Hills.

In 1978 she moved to Mexico permanently, buying a beautiful house in Cuernavaca called Tres Bambus, built by a Japanese architect in a chic neighborhood. She despaired of growing old and in her last years sought the company of young people. She mourned at the loss of her beauty and was cantankerous to the end.

Tamara De Lempicka died in her sleep on March 18, 1980 with her daughter Kizette at her side. Her wish to be cremated and have her ashes spread on the top of the volcano Popocatepetl was carried out.

Finally another Klimt Wine Master. Klimt is another big favorite of mine but doing paintings after

him is so intense as there is so very much detail. They take a very long time but I am always happy

with the result. I haven't done many with dark dramatic backgrounds such as I am known for

with my Drama Works Series nude oil paintings. I really like the drama of the way the colors stand out

against the black background so I think I will be painting more drama into some of my next pieces.

This is Klimt Wine Master IV.......wonder how many I will do?
