I did a Homage to Pater Max in the beginning of the year titled
Peter's Piano. I have to say that it is one of the most popular paintings for
this year. I did several similar, but not the same commissions, including a
very large format commission for a friend of Peter Max's, which just
thrilled me. I Check out his site www.themaxcollector.com

I thought it would be great to do another now as Peter just released
 his new isong

You have to love him. He has works all over the place and knows
 so many people and other artists. What a legacy!...and such a nice guy too! I
have listed some facts about him here that I thought were interesting.
 Always learning something new! Love it!

This painting is 12 x 16, a really nice size and different from the first
 Peter's Piano at 11 x 14.
It is my impression of combined elements from five of Peter's
 paintings including his self portrait. The flooring is from another as well as
the Baldwin Piano that he painted. What great colors!

NPR Limited Edition Peter Max iSongBook
In honor of NPR's 40th anniversary, the iconic pop artist 

Peter Max
 has graciously designed this limited edition 

Tivoli iSongBook for NPR.

Peter Max (born Peter Max Finkelstein, October 19, 1937) is a
 German-born Jewish American artist best known for his “Cosmic 60s”
 art style, as it came to be known in the 1960's . At first, works in this
style appeared on posters and were seen on the walls of college dorms
all across America. Max then became fascinated with new printing techniques
 that allowed for four-color reproduction on product merchandise.
In 1970, many of Max's products and posters were featured in the exhibition
 "The World of Peter Max" which opened at the M.H. de Young
Memorial Museum in San Francisco. The US Postal Service commissioned
Max to create the first 10¢ postage stamp to commemorate the  Expo
74World's Fair in Spokane, Washington. July 4, 1976, Max began his
 Statue of Liberty series leading to his efforts with  Chrysler CEO Lee
Iacocca  to help spearhead the restoration of the statue.

Official artist for many major events including Grammy Awards, Rock
 and Roll Hall of Fame, The Super bowl and others.

He also hosted the Xpress Peter Max Coloring Contest in the St. Petersburg
 Times in November 2005. The contest, located in St. Petersburg, Florida,
was a contest for children to color in a sketch by Max. Of 800 entries, 90
were sent to Max, who chose a grand prize winner, a runner-up and 10
honorable mentions

Max's art work was a part of the Psychedelic movement in graphic design.
His work was much imitated in commercial illustration in the late 1960s
and early 1970s.

His artwork is currently on the walls of CBS's The Early Show where
his newly created installation of 44 Obamas, commemorating the 44th
President of The United States was debuted.

Max owns a collection of 36 Chevrolet Corvettes, dating from 1953 to
1988, one for each year. The collection has been horribly neglected.
Peter Max is an environmentalist and defender of human and animal rights.

One of Continental Airlines" Boeing 777-200ER aircraft
(registered N77014) sported a special livery designed by Max.
The livery was removed in the winter of 2007–2008.

Peter Max currently lives in New York Citywith his wife, Mary Max.

Of course I would like the works of Marcel Mouly with
all the wonderful brilliant colors he used.  Many times
I am asked if I have larger paintings for this Art within
Art Series so I  decided to do a few that are larger than 11 x 14
my basic size. They are so full of detail that it takes much
 longer to paint but I do have a few even larger coming up.

This one is 16 x 16 and full of brilliance!

I love this painting for all the Red, my favorite signature color.
  Makes me happy! I took elements from several Marcel Mouly
 paintings and did my impression of them to compose this piece.

Marcel Mouly (February 6, 1918 – January 7, 2008) was a French
artist who painted in an abstract style.

Mouly was born in Paris France on February 6, 1918. His Interest
in art developed in grade school. A precocious, mischievous child,
 Mouly was first sent to drawing class as a form of punishment.
However, Mouly loved learning to draw, and exhibited a natural
artistic talent, though his path to a career as an artist proved not to
be a linear one.

By the mid-1940s, Mouly's art began to gain notoriety from his peers
 and collectors; in 1945 his paintings were exhibited in the Salon
 d' Automne in Paris, and the following year at the Salon d" Mai.
 Mouly's first one-person exhibition was held in 1949 at the Libraire
Bergamasque.
Mouly's style was influenced by the deep, bold colors typically used
 in Matisse's fauvist works, and by the cubism of  Picasso. Beginning
 in the mid-1950s, Mouly created many lithographs. And his works
received great interests globally.
Marcel Mouly's work has been exhibited all over the world, including
in the permanent collections of more than 20 museums, such as the
Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in Japan,
 the Museum of Geneva, the Museum of Modern Art in Helsinki, and
Paris' Bibliotheque. He has also been the subject of numerous books,
and recognized by such honors as the Chevalier de L'Orde des Arts
 et Lettres (1957) and the Premier Prix de Lithographie (1973).
Though Marcel Mouly died on January 7, 2008, weeks shy of his
90th birthday, his art and his legacy live on. "His art is pure and
direct in its message," art historian and writer Joseph Jacobs said,
"it is an art about beauty and life, an art roots firmly planted in the
School of Paris, Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Roault, Vlaminck, Chagall,
Vuillard and Dufy are his patrimony, and he has carried their mantel
with unflagging dedication." At his death in 2008, he was the last
living protégé of Picasso.

At one time and for a very long time men dominated the artists

world. Georgia O’Keeffe not only carved out a significant place
 for women painters in an area of the American art community
 that had been exclusive to and is still dominated by men, but
also she had become one of America’s most celebrated cultural
 icons well before her death at age 98 in 1986.

I admire Georgia O'Keefe and her beautiful style. Her freedom
 of spirt shows in all of her work. She made a huge break
through for women in the art world. I want to pay a really
nice homage to her but wanted to keep the painting minimal
with impact and drama.
I found this great black and white photo by photographer
Alfred Stieglitz . He thought it would be fun to show those same
lovely hands at an older age, The photo was taken in 1966 as part
of a Life Magazine story by John Leongard.


Originally she was sitting on a bed but I wanted her to have
somewhat of a look of royalty so I thought this high back chair
would do the trick. Georgia loved to paint very large and very
close up on her subjects and expressed this technique all the
 time with her abstract floral paintings. I think my impression
of her floral abstracts expressed the magnitude of her work.
Since I also decide to use her Black and White Rose for the floor
of the painting, I thought it would be great to leave Georgia
in black and white as in the photo, somewhat monochromatic.

Monochromatic: containing or using only one color:
Although this composition is not totally monochromatic I think
I captured the dramatic expression of the painting that I was going for
as my homage to Georgia O'Keefe.
I wonder though...what book is she holding in the photo?

Georgia O'Keeffe was born November 15, 1887, in a farmhouse
near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Her parents, Francis Calyxtus
 O'Keeffe and Ida Totto O'Keeffe, were dairy farmers. Georgia
was the first female and the second of seven O'Keeffe children.
O'Keeffe attended Town Hall School in Sun Prairie. By age ten
she had decided to become an artist.

O'Keeffe first came to the attention of the New York art
community in 1916, several decades after women had gained
access to art training in America’s colleges and universities,
and before any of its women artists were well known or highly
celebrated. Within a decade, she had distinguished herself as
one of America's most important modern artists, a position she
 maintained throughout her life.

Her abstract imagery of the 1910s and early 1920s is among the
 most innovative of any work produced in the period by American
 artists. She revolutionized the tradition of flower painting in the
1920s by making large-format paintings of enlarged blossoms,
 presenting them close up as if seen through a magnifying lens.

In 1972, O' Keeffe's eyesight was compromised by, leading to the
 loss of central vision and leaving her with only her peripheral vision.
She stopped oil painting without assistance in 1972,
but continued working in pencil and charcoal until 1984.

 Juan Hamilton, a young potter, appeared at her ranch house in
 1973 looking for work. She hired him for a few odd jobs and
soon employed him full time. He became her closest confidante,
 companion, and business manager until her death. Hamilton
 taught O'Keeffe to work with clay, and working with assistance,
she produced clay pots and a series of works in watercolor. In
1976, she wrote a book about her art and allowed a film to be
made about her in 1977. On January 10, 1977, President Gerald
Ford presented O'Keeffe with the Presidential Medal of Freedom
 the highest honor awarded to American citizens. In 1985, she
was awarded the  National Medal of Arts.

O'Keeffe became increasingly frail in her late 90s. She moved to
Santa Fe in 1984, where she died on March 6, 1986, at the age of
 98. In accordance with her wishes, she was cremated and her
 ashes were scattered to the wind at the top of the Pedernal Mountain,
over her beloved "faraway".

I am always looking for new artist that I can study

and paint with. Kees von Dongan caught my eye.

I love his flair for beautiful woman caught my eye.

However, I could not decide on just one or two

of his beauties so I decided to use four in one painting.

They all look so relaxed and mellow. Nice wine, art and

music to enjoy together. The painting on the wall is

Kees Van Dongen: Tango or The Tango of the Archangel,

ca. 1923 - 1935 and a very interesting composition.

Kees van Dongen, it turns out, was a Dutch painter, born in
 Rotterdam on 26 January 1877, at, according to Astrodatabank,
7am. He moved to Paris in his twenties and achieved some success,
using inspiration from the raw sensuality he found in that great city.


Van Dongen can be seen an observer of society, from the bohemian
world through to the “cocktail age,” his work is influenced by the
scandalous and urban world of cabaret, the circus and women, very
different from the landscape Fauvism (often associated with this
movement) and later ventures into the Parisian high society and his
 representation of the Roaring Twenties.  For more information in this

Every once in awhile I have to do a painting

inspired by Tamara de Lempicka. She was such a glamor puss.

She came from wealth and married wealth and soom became the

artist to the stars when she moved to Hollywood from Paris

during the Art Deco period. She was many times mistaken

for a star herself. She loved the life and loved the fame and

glamor and was a very talented portrait artist.

I get a kick out of so many artists from that period

thought very buxom large women were beautiful and painted

many of them. Isn't that nice. Something we do not see

much of today!

This painting was inspired by Tamara with my take of one

of her nudes. What is that man doing!!! Is he sneaking a peek

of her lounging nude in front of the scenery of the lake?

Does she know he's there? Who is "The Man in The Mirror?

The tulips are my take from another of her works.

Love her palette!

Tamara de Lempicka was born Maria Gorska of well-to-do parents in turn-of- the-century Poland. After her mother and father divorced, her wealthy grandmother spoiled her with clothes and travel. By age 14 she was attending school in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Now known as Tamara De Lempicka, the refugee studied art and worked day and night. She became a well-known portrait painter with a distinctive Art Deco manner. Quintessentially French, Deco was the part of a exotic, sexy, and glamorous Paris that epitomized Tamara's living and painting style.

At the threat of a second World War, she left Paris for America. She went to Hollywood, to become the "Favorite Artist of the Hollywood Stars". She and her second husband, Baron Raoul Kuffner, one of her earliest and wealthiest patrons, moved into American film director King Vidor's former house in Beverly Hills.

In 1978 she moved to Mexico permanently, buying a beautiful house in Cuernavaca called Tres Bambus, built by a Japanese architect in a chic neighborhood. She despaired of growing old and in her last years sought the company of young people. She mourned at the loss of her beauty and was cantankerous to the end.

Tamara De Lempicka died in her sleep on March 18, 1980 with her daughter Kizette at her side. Her wish to be cremated and have her ashes spread on the top of the volcano Popocatepetl was carried out.

Finally another Klimt Wine Master. Klimt is another big favorite of mine but doing paintings after

him is so intense as there is so very much detail. They take a very long time but I am always happy

with the result. I haven't done many with dark dramatic backgrounds such as I am known for

with my Drama Works Series nude oil paintings. I really like the drama of the way the colors stand out

against the black background so I think I will be painting more drama into some of my next pieces.

This is Klimt Wine Master IV.......wonder how many I will do?

Gustav Klimt (July 14, 1862 – February 6, 1918) was an Austrian Symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Art Nouveau (Vienna Secession) movement. His major works include paintings, murals, sketches and other art objects, many of which are on display in the Vienna Secession gallery. Klimt's primary subject was the female body, "The most important element of his fame is his reputation as a master of eroticism." [ and his works are marked by a frank eroticism–nowhere is this more apparent than in his numerous drawings in pencil. These female subjects, whether formal portraits or indolent nudes, invariably display a highly sensitized fin de siècle elegance. Klimt work was a move away from naturalism, the depiction of realistic objects in a natural setting. The Realism movement of the 19th century advocated naturalism in reaction to the stylized and idealized depictions of subjects in Romanticism. Klimt's work sought to break this connection, preferring a more symbolic mode of expression.
